Logan Yanick of Courtenay posted a third-place finish at the Canadian Junior Golf Association PUMA Challenge golf tournament. The 36-hole Junior Worlds qualifier was held March 26-27 at University Golf Club in Vancouver. There were 72 juniors in the field, with Yanick playing in the competitive Boys 14 & Under division. Yanick was in a two-way tie for fifth after Saturday. For the second event in a row, he came from the second last group to fire an even-par 72 on Sunday to go with an opening round 79. His seven-over par 151 was just four shots back of Jordan Lu of Vancouver, who won his third consecutive 2011 CJGA tour event. Meanwhile, Yanick and fellow Comox Valley golfer Mark Valliere were part of a six-person team that earned Zone 6 the championship at the 2011 Zones 3/4/5/6 Team Challenge, held recently at Mount Brenton golf course in Chemainus. Valliere shot a sparkling 68 while Yanick carded a 77 as Zone 6’s team total of 433 was 10 shots better than runner-up Zone 3. It is the first time in 19 years Zone 6 has won the Team Challenge. Zone 4 was third with 445 while Zone 5 was fourth with 456. sports@comoxvalleyrecord.com
