Young cyclists will be in the South Okanagan to compete in the Hayman Classic Youth Cycling Championships in early June.

Close to 200 male and female competitors from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon and the United States are expected to participate.

On Friday June 10 is the beginning of the Hayman Classic which is the B.C. youth cycling championship.

The Hayman Classic starts with a time trial west of Summerland, which is then followed by a morning criterium on the Saturday June 11 in Penticton. After that, on June 12, will be a morning road race in and around Oliver.

This race is named after Ron Hayman, one of Canada’s most famous cyclists. He competed for team Canada in the 1972 Olympics in Munich and the 1976 Olympics in Montreal as well as being the youngest member of the Canadian Olympic team being at the age of 18.

Hayman also has a record in the Vancouver Gastown Grand Prix with three strait wins a record that still stands today among many more achievements.

In this race there are up to four categories, running in two-year increments from Under 13 to Under 19.
