A trio of lakecity bowlers racked up medals during the weekend at the 5 Steps to Stardom Zone Championships in Prince George.
Kara McAlpine, Caleb Cebuliak and Renee O’Hara headed north to compete at the championships, split between Nechako Lanes and Black Diamond Lanes in Prince George.
Both Caleb and Renee, competing against the best bowlers their age at zones, punched their tickets to provincials by winning gold medals.
Kara, meanwhile, won a bronze medal in her division.
Caleb competed in the 11- to 14-year-old division and pitched a 281 for his highest game of the tournament.
“I got two turkeys and three four-baggers (four strikes),” Caleb said, noting he won his division by 16 points combined over five games.

“I averaged about 214 so that was about my average right now. Heading in I was at about 190.”
Roughly 15 bowlers competed in Caleb’s division.
“I’m very happy,” he said, noting he also won at zones last year and is excited for the chance to compete at provincials — this year held in March in Langley — again.
“Heading in I’m hoping to win, but I just want to place,” he said.
Renee said she’s excited and nervous about the chance to bowl at provincials.
“I’m very, very nervous but I think I’ll do good,” Renee said.
At zones, Kara also said she was pleased with how she bowled, especially a 242 game.
“That was in my fourth game, and that’s the highest game I’ve got so far in my bowling career,” the nine year old said.
The trio, along with other youth bowlers, are currently in the midst of their YBC season, which began in September and stretches until April.
