This past Sunday’s KidSport Classic half-marathon, relay, walk and run boasted a strong contingent of local youth.
Of the 221 competitors in the event, 45 were either elementary school or high school students and comprised 13 teams in the event.
Cataline elementary teacher Rya Enns took on training a group of 30 students from Mountview elementary and nine from Cataline elementary.
“They trained for two months to get to this point,” Enns said.
“The kids knew they were running to help raise money for kids that couldn’t afford to pay for sports, and I think the empathy these kids had for others was incredible.”
Out of the 13 youth teams, Mountview placed first, second and third in the medals, while Sacred Heart finished fourth, another Mountview team finished fifth and Cataline finished sixth.
Gold medal winners from Mountview were Finley Enns, Colton Seaward, Elizabeth Casler and Ashley Howell.
Two racers, 10-year-olds Cade Enns and Jacob Jackson, who finished on the bronze-medalling team, were competing in their very first 10-kilometre race.
