Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association (PRYSA) held its annual general meeting last month and several updates came out of that.
Here are the highlights:
The association has invited the Whitecaps Academy to offer a program, which will run from approximately the beginning of May until mid-July. PRYSA and Terrace Youth Soccer will be sharing an academy coach who will travel between the two communities. More details of how it will run will be available in the near future.
Youth soccer is Rupert’s most-played sport and it grew even more in 2016. There were 598 players registered this year, exceeding the 580 from 2015.
PRYSA is aiming to hire a technical director for part of the 2017 season. This will be the third year it has had a position like this, which is to improve the skill level of the players and coaches.
A new division will be introduced this coming season. The league will now have a U5 category, for players to start even younger. Previously, U6 was the youngest division.
Online registration will start even earlier this year. The PRYSA hopes to start that on January 1 and end on March 1. There will also be at least one in-person registration session at the civic centre as well. The regular season will begin as usual, during the first week of April.
The league has filled most of its positions, but is still on the lookout for two jobs. The association needs a volunteer registrar, who would be responsible for running the registration process on the website and training division coordinators on it. PRYSA also needs someone to coordinate and run the U6-U10 play day. Volunteer coaches are also needed for all of the teams.
