On July 24, 288 golfers gathered at Surrey’s Northview Golf & Country Club for the 17th annual Buy-Low Golf Classic in support of Variety – The Children’s Charity.
The golf classic is one of Buy-Low’s largest fundraisers for Variety, its charity of choice for over 30 years. More than 350 people are involved, including volunteers from Buy-Low and Variety, who roll out the red carpet for Buy-Low’s guests of honour – its suppliers and customers.
“We want to show our appreciation to our partners and wholesale customers in a big way, which is why our annual Variety Golf Classic has a reputation for being one of the best golf tournaments in the food industry” says Albert Lum, Director of Merchandising at Buy-Low. “It’s thanks to our suppliers, many of whom sponsored this event, that we are able to support Variety in so many different ways throughout the year.”
Buy-Low’s President Dan Bregg was thrilled to present a cheque for $65,000 Variety, and spoke passionately about his organization’s focus on families: “Buy-Low is built upon a tradition of giving back to the communities we serve. Our founders made that commitment 47 years ago and we have never wavered from our mission. We are honoured to help Variety help kids and families in need across BC.”
As well as the golf classic, Buy-Low Foods supports Variety in a number of different ways throughout the year: the annual Picnic in the Park gives children who have special needs, and their families, a day of fun with a barbecue, games, music and entertainment at Lower Mainland park; students who participate in Variety’s annual Gold Hearts fundraiser have the opportunity to win $3,000 in scholarships from Buy-Low as an incentive; families and kids feast every year at the Buy-Low barbecue at Variety’s Boat For Hope event in Vancouver; and the signature fundraiser, the Variety Market & Auction, presented by Buy-Low, is a key event that attracts hundreds of eager shoppers to the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver every October for a day of bidding, bargains and brunch!
“Variety is fortunate to have the continued support of Buy-Low Foods over so many years,” says Bernice Scholten, Variety’s Executive Director. “We share the same vision of helping families all across the province, and in this we have a true partner with our friends at Buy-Low. The need is growing and thanks to Buy-Low’s support, Variety continues to have a significant and positive impact in the lives of children who have special needs.”
While the golf classic was an invitation-only event, the 32nd annual Variety Market & Auction, presented by Buy-Low Foods, takes place Oct. 6 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver and is open to everyone. An event popular with savvy bargain hunters, it’s a once-a-year opportunity to stock up on grocery items with marked down prices not seen since the days of poodle skirts and 45” records. If you haven’t been to this event, this is the year to attend. Tickets sell out quickly and will be available in late August on Variety’s website: www.variety.bc.ca
