Island Health announced a $10.4-million contract with Chartwell Retirement Residences to operate a new care home in south Nanaimo.
Chartwell is re-developing the Malaspina Gardens care residence at 100 Twelfth St., behind Country Grocer in Southgate Mall. Construction has started on the residential care facility, with occupation expected in March of next year, according to a press release from Island Health.
The new building, expected to cost $27.4 million, replaces the current structure at 388 Machleary St.
Residents and staff have been given advance notice of the new site. Chartwell’s existing license of 133 residential care beds, plus an additional three private pay beds, will be included at the new site, including 40 licensed dementia beds.
“Building in a new location ensures minimal disruption for existing residents and staff,” said Brent Binions, president and CEO of Chartwell Retirement Residences. “Our commitment to quality care will continue to be our highest priority during this project and we will be working with residents and family members to co-ordinate their safe and stress-free move to the new location.”
Chartwell offers a range of seniors housing communities in Canada, from independent supportive living through assisted living to long-term care. It is the largest owner and operator of seniors residences in Canada and employs approximately 14,000 staff.
