Kwantlen students deliver the numbers

Kwantlen Polytechnic University accounting students place second in Certified Management Accountants of B.C. Case Competition.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) accounting students placed second in the sixth annual Certified Management Accountants of British Columbia (CMABC) Case Competition on Nov. 3.

Representing KPU were first- and second-year students Clayton Dendy, Hardeep Rai, Andy Nguyen and Anesha Kaid. The team earned a shared prize of $2,000.

“Case competitions provide students with stimulating opportunities to test drive their newly acquired skills,” said Wayne Tebb, dean, school of business, KPU. “Working under pressure they get to exercise their analytical skills, determine the strategic direction they think is best suited and advocate a time-tied, results-oriented real life action plan to a panel of seasoned industry veterans. For polytechnic university students this is the next best thing to being hired to do it.”

Thirty teams from KPU, Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, Okanagan College, Capilano University, Camosun College and the University of British Columbia-Okanagan competed against each other. Students were tested on their management leadership skills by analyzing the fictional business case of Sarah’s Antiques. Students were given one day to work on this case before they had to present a recommended solution to the company’s fictional senior management team.

“I was very impressed with the participants’ presentation skills as well as their composure during the Q&A session,” said Bryan Hack, CMA, one of the judges for the competition.

The competition provided participating students with an understanding of challenges and issues faced by management. It also provided an opportunity to learn best practices, apply them in a demanding and creative situation, and acquire an appreciation of a business leader’s role.
