Mission RCMP inspector explains police’s role

The relatively new inspector of the local Mountie detachment spoke at the chamber of commerce's monthly luncheon Thursday

Mission’s top cop laid out his strategic direction for crime fighting at Thursday’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Insp. Richard Konarski outlined how policing has changed, how the detachment is structured and the regional and provincial policing resources that are at Mission’s disposal. He then spoke about the strategic direction that has been developed which focuses on three key areas: organized crime and gangs, youth and domestic violence.

Recognizing the connection between organized crime and the drug trade in Mission, the inspector noted the province is committed to work collaboratively with police in combatting the grow-op problem. He went on to speak how realigning youth at risk will disrupt emerging youth gangs and the importance of the restorative justice program in that process.  He also addressed the social impact of domestic violence and investigative protocols that have been developed.

Konarski said the police’s role is to use action to make a difference, and in reviewing the crime triangle, he spoke to the individuals’ and business’ crime reduction responsibility.
