Pages Bookstore is struggling to keep its doors open due to a lack of volunteers.
New Page Human Services Society, which operates the store, is looking for people who have some free time to spend a couple of hours a week helping out.
“The last thing we want to do is shorten our hours,” said society chair Marla Rosenberg. “We have seen such an increase in business since moving to Fraser Avenue, but it is hard to find people willing to give us a few hours a week. I think people believe they have to come for days on end. But really people can volunteer as much or as little as they want.”
Pages has been operating in Hope for more than 15 years selling used books as a way of raising funds for local projects. It provides a community drop-in centre and offers retail training for adults with special needs. The bookstore is also the face of the New Page Human Services Society, which organizes Story Time in the Park, manages the community literacy program and runs two adult literacy programs.
“The work is so rewarding,” said Rosenberg. “You feel good when you help out and there’s no knowing where that goodness will go.”
