The owner of an East Beach ice cream shop is hoping to sweeten a neighbour’s effort to lend a helping hand in Haiti.
Shafique Saleemi said proceeds from his Cones for a Cause fundraiser this Saturday (July 19) at his Crazy Cows Ice Cream store (15547 Marine Dr.) will benefit Project Aftershock, an organization created to help Haitians impacted by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010.
Project Aftershock’s executive director Laura Mawhinney – who owns Project Aftershock Thrift Store on East Beach – said the organization provides medical clinics, life-saving medicine and surgery, as well as family sponsorship and food programs for two orphanages in Port-au-Prince. Funds raised July 19 – $1 per cone sold between noon and 5 p.m. – will benefit a mission trip that heads for Haiti on July 24.
Saleemi said this is the third year for Cones for a Cause. In 2011, proceeds benefited the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.
“Every year, we try to think of a good deed,” Saleemi said. “Next year, we’ll do it for Peace Arch Hospital.”
