Telus to invest $5.5 million in Abbotsford

TELUS will invest $5.5 million in Abbotsford in 2012 to expand 4G LTE to the community and introduce Optik TV to even more homes.

TELUS will invest $5.5 million in Abbotsford in 2012 to expand 4G LTE – the fastest wireless technology in the world – to the community and introduce Optik TV to even more homes.

“The demand for wireless services is exploding in Abbotsford and TELUS is committed to making investments in infrastructure and technology to better serve our customers and community,” said  Lance MacDonald, director of Customer Solutions Delivery.

This significant investment is part of $3 billion in infrastructure upgrades being made across B.C. through 2014 and builds upon the $26 billion TELUS has already invested in operations and technology throughout the province over the last 10 years.

The $5.5 million investment includes:

• Extending its new 4G LTE network to Abbotsford. TELUS 4G LTE network supports manufacturers’ rated peak download speeds of up to 75 megabits per second (Mbps), with an expected average of 12 to 25 Mbps.

• Extend Optik TV to more Abbotsford homes this year. By the end of 2012 TELUS will expand the reach of its Optik TV service to reach 1.3 million B.C. households. At the end of 2011 TELUS had 509,000 TV customers, adding 56,000 in the final three months of the year.

• Bring advanced wireless and wireline broadband to nearby rural communities. TELUS has already started this work east of the Fraser Valley – where the company has invested $650,000 to bring broadband service to local residents in Manning Park this year.

• Support unique community fundraising projects in Abbotsford like the Phones and TV for Good campaigns whereby TELUS is donating $100 on behalf of every new Optik TV and smartphone customer to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford.
