Tolko Industries president Brad Thorlakson recently took part in a trade mission to China led by Premier Christy Clark.

“I definitely saw a lot more wood use on this trip,” said Thorlakson.

“And the comfort level in building with wood is on the rise. The construction industry in China is shifting—somewhat slowly but when you consider the potential, it’s really exciting.”

China is expected to drive half of all global construction activity until 2020.

“The growth of lumber use in China and other Asia Pacific markets is key to the B.C. forest industry’s long term success,” said Thorlakson.

“Residential construction is not coming back in the United States anytime soon. Continued diversification is a must.”  Today Tolko has over 40% of its products heading to offshore markets around the world. “While demand in China has recently slowed along with most global markets, the long term positioning is crucial.”
