A group of Vernon students are being acknowledged for entrepreneurship.
Vernon Secondary School’s economics team is one of three finalists after the Junior Achievement of B.C.’s Innovation Jam, presented by Chartered Professional Accountants in Vancouver. Twenty schools participated in the event.
“I was so impressed by their teamwork, their business skills and their great presentation,” said Susan Egan, teacher and coach.
The VSS team consists of Grade 12 students Tanner Lorenson, Demetre Kontos, Emma Tetrault, Matt Young, Tess Despres and Megan Reeves.
The other two finalists are teams from West Vancouver and North Vancouver.
The winning team will be announced in May.
During the Innovation Jam, participants were led through a workshop which challenged them to develop business ideas that have a social mission. Teams were then coached on their pitches by business leaders and entrepreneurs from Business in Vancouver’s Top Forty Under 40 as well as JABC sponsors.
From VSS, the concept was No More Secrets a sustainable lingerie company aimed at eliminating sex slavery. The company would employ disadvantaged women at a fair wage and profits would go towards education for young women.
