Winery changes hands

Lang Winery will continue to operate with a change of ownership after being purchased by Bravo Enterprises Ltd.

In December it was announced that the court ordered the assets of Holman Group wineries, including Lang Vineyards, to be placed in receivership. Just over $22 million of assets held by Holman Group, including Soaring Eagle Estate Winery, Stonehill Estate Winery and other properties were accepting offers.

The property that became Lang Winery was originally purchased by Guenther and Kristina Lang when they immigrated to Canada in 1980. The Langs selected the site in Naramata because of its excellent soils and enviable microclimate. According to Bravo Enterprises Ltd., the winery opened its doors 10 years later, becoming B.C.’s first cottage winery. Its best-known wines are Riesling, Merlot, Gewürztraminer and Marechal Foch, and are all crafted with traditional old-world winemaking methods.

“It is important to me that we will continue with the excellence that Mr. Guenther Lang has originally instilled in Lang Winery,” said Bravo Enterprises owner Y. Wang. “We will strive to produce quality wine and become a deserving member of this wonderful wine community in the Okanagan.”

After transfer of ownership, the winery will continue to produce the same varietals. Guenther Lang will be leading a team of consultants, working closely with European-educated winemaker Laurent Lafuente — who has worked at wineries in France and Switzerland before coming to Canada. With the change of ownership, the winery’s profile will be renewed with plans to redesign the logo and packaging.

The winery plans to become a member of the Naramata Wine Association and the owner looks forward to bringing together a strong team to continue to produce the Okanagan wine.
