Canim Lake Band is celebrating Aboriginal Day in style on June 21 by hosting a full day of fun for everyone to enjoy.
Event co-ordinator Pam Theodore says the public is welcome to join in the activities at Eliza Archie Memorial School, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., beginning with a welcome by Chief Mike Archie.
Displays and demonstrations covering a wide variety of traditional crafts, other heritage activities and even some hands-on opportunities will be happening throughout the day.
These will feature demonstrations of traditional drum-making, basket weaving, beadwork and cradle- and net-making, as well as ethnobotony, healthy foods, and hunting and fishing displays.
Drumming and dancing performances will keep folks tapping their feet while they peruse the booths and munch on hotdogs from the concession.
A bannock contest, Lahal (demo games and mini-tournament) and the Amazing Rez Race will put some band member’s skills to the test, and provide some more fun for spectators.
The public can participate in novelty and youth races, as well as children’s crafts and two types of bingo games, with plenty of prizes to be awarded, Theodore adds.
She notes the event offers a good chance for folks to visit with the band community and see some of the cultural activities that take place there every day.
