The spaceship is landing and all the little martians are heading to a Vernon nightclub to party with the lead alien on Halloween night.
Presented by Vernon’s 13th Floor, DJ phenom Mat the Alien is hauling his decks to Vernon’s newly named and owned The Max night club (formerly 2929) for an electronic dance party like no other, said presenter Josh Brazier, with 13th Floor.
“Mat the Alien draws a massive crowd wherever he plays,” said Brazier. “Support from Okanagan residents Subclaim, MetaphOracle and Purpskurp ensure the entire night will be filled with music that almost forces you to dance.”
Powered by more than 10,000 watts of PK Sound, with stage design by 13th Floor, this event is sure to bring chills to your spine, added Brazier.
“We’ve made some significant improvements to the sound and visual aspects of our shows and know people will be impressed,” he said. “With ticket sales already underway, this is shaping up to be a really good night in Vernon. Costumes are highly recommended and there will be prizes for those who go above and beyond with their creativity.”
Now based in Whistler, Mat the Alien was born and raised in the U.K. and grew up in his family’s record store. He started mixing, scratching and making beats at the age of 14.
It wasn’t until he moved to Canada in the mid-‘90s that he began to hone his skills on the turntables. Led to Whistler by his other passion, snowboarding, Mat found himself playing to varied crowds of people visiting the snow-sport destination from all over the world. It was playing regular club nights in Whistler that he adapted and originated his ability to seamlessly blend genres such as dub, dancehall, hip-hop, breaks, rock, funk and drum and bass.
Described by Knowledge Magazine as “awe-inspiring,” Mat has toured across the globe, performing from Miami to Moscow and at sports events such as the Winter Olympic Games in Torino and Whistler, The X Games, and many of Canada’s largest festivals to more than 15,000 people. He has also pioneered club nights in Whistler and Vancouver and held down a biweekly club night in Las Vegas at Eye Candy in the Mandalay Bay resort.
His original music and remixes have been featured on numerous TV shows, DVDs and webisodes. His remixes for Nick Thayer and South Rakkas (featured on Diplos’ Mad Decent blog), and his original music have received positive feedback and plays from some of the industry’s biggest names. His scratches can be heard on tracks by Fort Knox Five, Eprom (Ill Gates remix), Sweatshop Union, and EA Sports NBA Home Court 3.
Now also touring with his video/DJ set, Mat the Alien is taking his solo DJ act to new heights, hitting all of the senses with custom remix and video edits.
West Coast DJ/producer Subclaim, who now resides in Vernon, is currently pushing deep ‘n dark sounds for local label Bassbong Records.
He has been playing dubs in the forests of B.C. since 2009, focusing on bass weight, soulful vibes, and dark atmospheres. His sound is said to be deeply rooted within low-end and relentless sub-bass frequencies.
Through clean mixing and a tight tune selection, including exclusives and originals, Subclaim says he brings forth a sound that is nostalgic, yet equally refreshing, and heavy enough to shake the toughest of sound systems.
Throughout his past, MetaphOracle has been gaining momentum, developing into one of Western Canada’s most unique anomalies.
His lifelong love affair with music has developed his sound into a mosaic of slamming rhythms, lush harmonies and bold bass lines. For close to a decade he has continued to add to his collection of originals and remixes while constantly refining his performance style into what it is known for today.
MetaphOracle has played at numerous festivals around B.C. and Alberta (Bushwacked, U4EEYAH, Mad Hatter, Bass Camp…) while continually bringing his vibe to a multitude of local events.
His influences are numerous and diverse, yet he finds himself sharing the stage with many of the people that helped originally spark his passion for music. In 2013, his original Bodacious Oasis gained attention from the Slow DJs in their monthly Slow Picks, while his remix of Kona Lows made waves on Beatport’s glitch hop charts.
