Art auction raises money for book festival

Children’s book illustrators from across the country contributed original artwork to a Nanaimo fundraising auction.

The inaugural online auction is raising money for BookFest, the annual children’s literacy event in downtown Nanaimo.

Ten illustrators donated artwork, based on a West Coast book theme especially for the Nanaimo book festival.

The artwork can be viewed at www.bookfestartauction.com. Bidding, hosted on EBay, opens April 28 and closes May 8.

The original artwork will also be on display at the Barton and Leier Gallery on Chapel Street from April 28 until May 6, before the show is moved to the downtown Nanaimo Art Gallery on May 7.

The art gallery is one of the venues hosting BookFest on that day.

Admission to the event is $10 per three author and illustrator sessions. Adult entry is free if accompanied by a child.

Tickets for BookFest are available through the Port Theatre box office at www.porttheatre.com or 250-754-8550.

Free sessions are also available for preschoolers, including parent-child rhyme time and a puppet show.
