A multicultural art project starting in Vernon is inviting interested immigrants, artists and residents to join the Fabrics of the World mosaic project, as part of the Welcoming Communities program.
The project will be a colourful mosaic tile composition, representing different cultures from around the world.
“The tile sections are a snapshot of immigration trends in Vernon over the past 10 years and highlights the rich cultural diversity that exists in our community,” said Lara Konkin, events and marketing coordinator with the Downtown Vernon Association.
Once completed, the project will be permanently displayed on the south facing wall of the City of Vernon’s community services building – previously the old library entrance.
“We are looking for volunteers to help put together the tile sections. They do not need to have a background in art, just an interest in learning about other cultures and mosaic,” said Konkin.
Interested participants can take part in a series of workshops that will help complete the mosaic tile project. It is a chance for community members to participate in creating a public art piece to be enjoyed for years to come.
As the lead agency for the project, the DVA will work closely with the Social Planning Council, City of Vernon and Vernon and District Immigrant Services.
The Social Planning Council is the host agency for the Welcoming Communities program in Vernon and is funded by the province of B.C.
The City of Vernon has donated a space downtown for the workshops. A schedule of workshop times will be posted on the DVA website at www.downtownvernon.com.
