Authors share stories behind place names

Editors Linda Dorricott and Deidre Cullon will be speaking about how some of Vancouver Island's most popular places got their names.

What do Mt. Benson, Mt. Moriarty, Bowen Island, De Courcy Island, Galiano Island and Mudge Island have in common? They were all named by Cpt. G.H. Richards of the Royal Navy. Between 1860 and 1862 Richards and his crew were commissioned to survey and chart the waters around Vancouver Island. Linda Dorricott and Deidre Cullon, editors of The Private Journal of Captain G.H. Richards: The Vancouver Island Survey (1860-1862), will be speaking at the Nanaimo Museum on March 12. Dorricott and Cullon will talk about how places such as Mt. Benson and Bowen Island were named and the stories behind Richard’s and his surveying crew. For more information, please visit www.nanaimomuseum.ca.
