The Surrey Symphony Society celebrates Mother’s Day this Sunday with a concert of 100 young musicians.
Under the direction of Dr. John Van Deursen, Carla Birston and Rick Dorfer, three youth orchestras will perform a fresh bouquet of music composed by popular composers such as Verdi, Holst, Wagner, Grieg, and Handel.
“Music is a gift, and a gift is to be shared,” said Matthew Yep, one of two winners of the Surrey Youth Orchestra’s annual Concerto Competition, who will be the featured soloist in Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 26.
Concerto competition winner Jiwon Shin will be the soloist for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 will conclude the concert.
Carla and Harold Birston will be honoured at the concert for 20 years of leadership with the Surrey Symphony Society. Carla is the director of the Intermediate Strings, while Harold is a successful composer and arranger who has written numerous orchestral works for the Intermediate Strings over the past two decades.
The Surrey Symphony Society will also present nine scholarships to deserving members of all three orchestras for 2013/14 season.
The non-profit society has been in existence for more than 35 years and its membership includes musicians ranging from age seven to 18.
Celebrating Our Mothers takes place May 12, 7 p.m. at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium, 10238 168 St. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for adults, $10 for youth and seniors.
