Some local dancers are gaining a reputation across B.C. and around the world.
Members of Sodance Vernon have had a busy year attending a number of high-profile competitions.
“We never stop,” said Olivia Grayce, choreographer.
In May, Sodance Vernon took a team of 25 dancers to a Dance World Cup qualifying competition and they achieved multiple first, second and third place awards as well as four nominations to compete in the Dance World Cup at Whistler in July.
Eight dancers, ages 14 to 16, and part of the newly formed performance crew Dynamic Revolution from Sodance Vernon, went to compete at the Dance World Cup in Whistler.
They achieved first place overall in age 13-plus modern group and second place overall in age 13-plus musical theatre.
Briana L’Arrivee achieved third place in her hip hop solo.
“It was an absolutely amazing experience,” said L’Arrivee.
“Competing against dancers who are currently ranked first in the world was an experience I can’t wait to be part of again.”
Grayce was pleased with her dancers.
“To even qualify for the competition was a huge achievement for these dancers,” she said.
“We trained really hard all year to improve on different aspects of our routines and keep them innovative. We also incorporated some interesting props for two of our entries. Not a lot of people realize how hard it is to keep bouncing balls in complete synchronization.”
And the busy schedule didn’t stop during the summer, including a performance at the Sunshine Festival in downtown Vernon.
They are also preparing for performances and competitions throughout the fall.
“We have so many projects on the go this year,” said Grayce.
“It’s been a really exciting start of the fall season for us already. I can’t wait to see what these dancers will be capable of at this time next year.”
