April is a month of excitement for the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (OSO), which is hosting a masterworks concert as well as a special piano recital and a fundraising event.
“We have such an exciting month ahead,” said Rosemary Thomson, OSO music director. “Enjoy and attend our masterworks concert, a piano recital and a fun and unique fundraiser; so many ways to support your local professional orchestra.”
The month kicks off with the April Masterworks concert, Dynamic Duo.
Guest artists Guy Few and Nadina Mackie Jackson, who have previously performed in Vernon to high acclaim, bring an unusual duo of trumpet and bassoon, which they perform with brilliance and “infectious high spirits.” Their virtuosity is showcased in solo and double concertos.
“Music from the baroque era shares the stage with more contemporary repertoire of great beauty that is sure to delight,” said Thomson.
The duo, along with the OSO, will hit the stage at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre Sunday, April 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Seller box office, by phone at 250-549-7469 or online at ticketseller.ca.
Next up, Canadian pianist and international star Louis Lortie will take the stage for one night only at the Mary Irwin Theatre in Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts April 16. The concert is in support of the Okanagan Symphony’s various community programs.
Lortie has attracted critical acclaim throughout Europe, Asia, and the U.S., and has extended his interpretative voice across a broad range of repertoire rather than choosing to specialize in one particular style.
The London Times described his playing as “ever immaculate, ever imaginative,” and identified the artist’s “combination of total spontaneity and meditated ripeness that only great pianists have.”
Tickets to see Lortie are $40 and can be purchased at www.selectyourtickets.com or by phone at 250-717-5304.
To close off the month, the OSO will be holding the first of their annual fundraisers, April 25 at Kelowna’s Laurel Packinghouse. Tickets are $90 and include an evening of bingo like you have never experienced before.
Bling it up and join the OSO for fabulous cuisine from Okanagan Street Food, bingo games, prizes, live jazz and a silent auction.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the OSO office at 250-763-7544 or online www.okanagansymphony.com.
