Students and parents have an opportunity to check out instructors in concert ahead of a summer workshop series.
Carli and Julie Kennedy, based in Nashville, fuse country, folk, jazz and Celtic songs. The twins are classically trained and hold degrees in music performance, and performed during the Vancouver Winter Olympics and Merritt Mountain Music Festival.
The Kennedys, along with Nico Rhodes and Erik Gow, are instructors performing Saturday (June 9) at Headliners, 165 Fraser St. All four artists will lead workshops as part of the Super Summer Workshops with Doug Dodd at Headliners.
Rhodes, adept at a number of instruments, was music director of Chemainus Theatre’s recent hit musicals All Shook Up and A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline. Rhodes performs with Gow, recently seen by Nanaimo audiences in Schmooze Productions’ The Full Monty and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Rhodes and Gow lead the musical theatre workshop, July 16-20, plus teaching music and acting courses individually. The Kennedy twins lead singing workshops in August.
Sharing the stage at Saturday’s concert will be 15-year-old singer Mikaila Tombe, winner of this year’s Vancouver Island Star Search, and 16-year-old Jayden Holman, who garnered the male vocalist gold medal at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
Tickets for City Lights and Country Nights are $18/advance at The Thirsty Camel, 14 Victoria Cres.; $20/door; $12/students. Doors open at 7 p.m., concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
