Terry Gillespie, Canada’s king of roots blues from Vankleek Hill, Ont., is currently touring Western Canada in support of his new CD Bluesoul.
He will be at Lorenzo’s Cafe in Ashton Creek Tuesday.
In case you aren’t familiar with Gillespie, he learned the blues first hand in the Detroit blues bars in the 1960s and played with legends like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and Howlin’ Wolf (who once asked him to join his band as a guitarist).
He then moved to Ottawa in 1969 and basically started the Blues scene there forming Heaven’s Radio, recognized as the best band in the city during the ‘70s.
He disappeared for a couple of decades battling alcoholism but he overcame it and returned to performing with a roar in the 2000s.
Gillespie has released several albums since then. His most recent Bluesoul is getting major international airplay and glowing reviews.
Terry plays a mix of blues, roots, soul, jazz, funk and reggae with a groove that is hard to describe until you see him.
