Global Film Festival focuses on international activism

Nanaimo's Global Film Festival focuses on international activism.

Film buffs with a taste for international creations can see more than 30 documentaries during Nanaimo’s Global Film Festival.

The festival, which starts Friday (Sept. 28) and runs until Sunday (Sept. 30) features three days of films covering a range of topics including, environmentalism, activism, resource extraction, local food production, water issues and more. This year films focus on activism and people who are re-inventing their world and their future.

The festival begins Friday at 11:30 a.m. with a screening of Economics of Happiness at the Corner Lounge, located at 121 Bastion St., thanks to local sponsorship by the Painted Turtle Guesthouse.  The documentary analysis globalization and through interviews with activists it examines how localizing economic activity will allow people to reduce their ecological footprint and increase human well-being. The lounge will also host three film screenings on Sunday (Sept. 30) Diversidad: A Road Trip to Deconstruct Dinner, The Pipe Dreams Project and Rainforest: the Limit of Splendor.

The majority of films will be shown Friday and Saturday at Vancouver Island University in buildings 355 and 356. The Global Film Festival also features a kid’s program. Kid’s films include Bearly Alike, Riddle in a Bottle, the Shark Riddle and more. They will be shown in Blg. 355 at the VIU campus on a by request basis.

Advance weekend passes are $25 and are available for purchase at Van-Isle Video, The Green Store, and Vancouver Island University’s Students ’ Union office. Full weekend and part day passes are also available at the festival. Film screenings at the Corner Lounge are by donation.
