Happy anniversaries!

Two special anniversaries will be celebrated downtown on Aug. 12.

This summer marks 10 years of operation for the Pier Street Farmers Market, and 25 years of fishing and ice cream on the Discovery Pier.

“The whole community’s invited to join the party for the top-class farmers market and the award-winning pier,” says Judy Ridgway, a programmer with the City’s Recreation and Culture department.

“Be part of the fun as we fish, cut and serve cake, and give away prizes!”

The City of Campbell River provided Canada with its first accessible fishing pier 25 years ago. Former recreation director Arnie Linder was responsible for operating and maintaining the pier, and he’s looking forward to being part of the anniversary celebration.

“I’ve got some great memories of those early days, some great laughs, and I’ll be happy to tell stories at the event,” Linder says, recalling how some of the pier benches went missing overnight in the first season and became fish habitat.

To celebrate these two milestones, the city will host an anniversary party on Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pier and Farmers Market.

Highlights include a kids fishing derby from 9 a.m. to noon, cake cutting at noon, free prizes draw at 2 p.m., and free commemorative shopping bags for the first 100 people to enter the draw.
