A Sullivan Heights Secondary student has won $2,000 in an Earth Day art competition.
Thomas Nelles, in Grade 11, was among high school artists representing 53 schools and 30 school districts who submitted 250 works of art to the Earthwise competition.
The contest was the first time that all B.C. high school students have been linked provincially to a single juried art show and competition.
Prize money up for grabs totalled $3,500. Nelles’ digital piece, Cultural Entropy, was among 50 chosen for the Earthwise exhibit. Winners were announced April 22.
Second prize, $1,000, went to Steveston-London Secondary’s Shirley Liu; Ju Young Lee of Langley Fine Arts school won the $500 third prize.
Twelve honourable mentions were also awarded; 49 students are to receive certificates of achievement.
