This Christmas season, Capilano University’s Theatre Department and Exit 22 Productions are putting a new twist on the classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol.

Based on the Charles Dickens story, director Stephen Atkins of Embodied Acting has infused the play with an acrobatic, circus-esque theme.

The story follows a company of low-rate Edwardian players, who are putting on a production of A Christmas Carol when their Scrooge and Tiny Tim jump ship.

A begrudging stage manager and his prop boy are pulled in for the pinnacle roles. The company then makes their way through the tale, creating fog, wind, thunder and ghosts through mime, turn-of-the-century mechanics, imagination and wonderful visual effects.

Langley actor Braden Kupfer (pictured, left) stars in the lead role as Scrooge/The Director.

Other key members on the team are Tami Knight of Circus West as the circus coach, Kevin Michael Cripps as musical director, Heidi Wilkinson as set designer, Christopher David Gauthier as costume designer and Michael Hewitt as lighting designer.

A Christmas Carol previews at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 and then runs Nov. 17-19, 23-26 at 7:30 p.m, with matinees on Nov. 20, 26 and 27 at 2 p.m.

Tickets range from $10 to $25, and are available at tickets.capilanou.ca or by calling 604-990-7810.

All performances take place at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts, in the Birch Building at Capilano University, 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver.
