Making golf a funny business

The Hacks Comedy Golf Tour, which brings together four headliner comedians for, you guessed it, golfing in the daytime and performances at night, is coming to Penticton on July 14.

The tag line reads “six comedy shows and six rounds of golf in six days.”

That’s The Hacks Comedy Golf Tour, which brings together four headliner comedians for, you guessed it, golfing in the daytime and performances at night.

It was Paul Myrehaug who figured out that they didn’t have to wait forever to fulfill a pledge the four comics had made.

“We’ve all been friends for a long time and said that if one of us made it big, he would have to take the others on a golf tour,” said Myrehaug.

Then Myrehaug had a brainstorm. Why wait? So he started putting together the tour, so he, along with Kevin Stobo, Kerry Unger and Sean Lecomber, could work their way around a half dozen favourite golf courses. But they also decided to do it in under a week, starting in Banff on July 12 and finishing up on July 17 in Kelowna.

And and at every stop on the tour, they’ll be putting both their touring and golf skills to the test. Except in Penticton, that is, where they’re taking the day off the golfing part of the adventure, choosing instead to be sponsored by Burger 55.

“We decided that a break in the middle of the tour might be a good idea,” said Myrehaug, explaining that instead, they decided they should work at least one good meal break into the tour.

Combined, the hacks bring some 50 years of stand-up comedy experience to the stage with a variety of credits that include both live and television exposure.  As solo performers, they’ve appeared at Just For Laugh and had their own hour specials on The Comedy Network, CBC, CTV and CMT.  They’ve appeared on CBC Radio including multiple appearances on The Debaters.

Each of them will bring something a little different to their performances, said Myrehaug. The evening, which gets underway at 8 p.m., runs for about 90 minutes, with each of the hacks taking to the stage at the Barking Parrot for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Tickets for the July 14 show are available at the Lakeside Resort in advance or at the door the night of the performance.  They are also available at Burger 55, or reservations can be made by phone at 250-493-9753.
