Young adults 19 and over are invited to take in a night of live music and dance battles at InFlux at the Surrey Art Gallery on June 1.

Mix it up – mehfil style – at the Surrey Art Gallery

June 1 event will feature hip hop and music mash-ups.

Mix it up with friends at InFlux with VIBC Media Arts Mehfil happening June 1 from 8-11 p.m. to 11pm at the Surrey Art Gallery.

Whether you want to soak up the sounds or get up and dance, be entertained by an evening of live music mash-ups, hip hop dance battles and media art projections as InFlux returns to the Gallery.

Intended for young adults, Surrey Art Gallery’s Influx evenings bring together art, music, and DIY activities in a casual, fun atmosphere.

Mehfil refers to an evening of entertainment in an intimate setting. A twist on the traditional mehfil style, this InFlux event will be an informal gathering of digital media artists, musicians, and dancers that brings together new collaborations grounded in mehfil’s emphasis on improvisation and sense of play.

Performers include Mohamed Assani, DJ A-Slam, Dave Bawa, Sammy Chien, Tad Hozumi, Harkeerat Mangat, Shava, Rup Sidhu, and Sukhraj. Shava, Finland’s only Bhangra group, will perform collaborative pieces with local artists.

This event is intended for young adults ages 19 and up. No tickets needed – donation at the door of $5 minimum per person. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Influx with VIBC Media Arts Mehfil is presented as part of the Surrey Art Gallery exhibition Spectacular Sangeet. Music and dance have long inspired visual artists to make pictures. More recently, South Asian performing arts traditions have sparked visual artists around the world to re-imagine ‘sangeet’ (music and dance) in a variety of electronic media and innovative forms. Including photo-paintings of Bharatanatyam dance, Bollywood poster collage, and kinetic photo-sculpture, the exhibition incorporates diverse genres of sangeet: from giddha to rock, and classical dance to contemporary movement.

Celebratory or critical, audacious or introspective, each artwork presents a picture worth a thousand songs and represents a living – and vibrant – artistic tradition. From Canada and England, the artists are Chila Kumari Burman, Oliver Husain, Harminder Judge, Project Rainbow, Ron Sangha, Jack Shadbolt, Ikbal Singh, and Meera Margaret Singh. Spectacular Sangeet is curated by Naveen Girn and Jordan Strom. Spectacular Sangeet is presented in collaboration with the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society. The exhibition continues to June 16.
