On car rides with her mother, Emma Postl was introduced to the worlds of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn.
She fell in love with jazz and spent hours singing along and learning their songs while growing up in Qualicum.
She decided at age 12 she wanted to pursue jazz as a career and in high school formed a jazz combo, winning numerous awards at festivals across B.C.
Following graduation, she spent a year in Germany participating in weekly jam sessions and performing with musicians local to Frankfurt. Not only did she gain performance experience, but she also learned a huge amount of new music.
Studying music at Capilano University in North Vancouver, Postl sang with the vocal group Nitecap.
Her approach to jazz is deeply rooted in the lyrics and melodies of the music, which comes across in her phrasing, her improvisation and her original music.
Postl performs with fellow Capilano students David Black and Wynston Minckler at Acme Food Co. on Monday (July 11) at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
