Musician plays expressive style

A musician regarded as a legend in soul jazz genre performs at the Port Theatre Tuesday (April 26).

Houston Person, known for his expressive style of playing, performs with Jodi Proznick, Phil Dwyer and Jesse Cahill.

Person made a name for himself performing in the hard bop and swing genres but is most experienced in soul jazz. He recorded a series of albums for Prestige Records in the 1960s and spent 35 years with his musical partner, vocalist Etta Jones, recording, performing and touring.

The partnership began when the two first met playing in organist Johnny Hammond’s band.

More than 90 albums feature Person as bandleader, with collaborations from Charles Brown, Bill Charlap, Charles Earland, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver, Dakota Staton, Billy Butler, Richard “Groove” Holmes and many others. He received the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982.

Proznick, Dwyer and Cahill are all Canadian jazz musicians, who won awards for their work and toured internationally.
