Mad Melody Records presents the second rap battle event on May 11 at Voodoos.
This event is open to contestants that wants to prove their freestyle skills, get recognized in the music scene and earn a chance for free recordings. Competitors will go heat-to-head as they must hold their ground as our hosts Robb O’day (MC Bodhi), and Kyle Keebaugh (JDK Nonstop), quickly throw at them random topics. Each contestant will have to create and a four bar freestyle about that specific topic. Each artist will get three different topics per round.
In the last round, the two artists can choose to have a final topic battle-off, or opt for the classic rap battle where both artists will have 45 seconds to call and make fun of each other, however all be in good taste.
The two lyricists will be judged by a panel of five known artist and producers from Penticton who will give feedback, but more importantly grade each artist on a five point scale with the categories of: flow, creativity/originality, lyricism/wordplay, stage presentation, topics and crowd reaction. A maximum of 30 points per round can be handed out.
The judges will average their points and declare a winner and loser of each round, whoever has the most points and a better win/loss record after two more events, will go on to win free recording time, and must rap against the current champion JDK non-stop. If they beat JDK in an extended topic battle event they will get ultimate bragging rights and a record contract with Mad Melody Records. The Topic Rap Battle takes place Friday, May 11 and admission is by donation for any fans who want to attend. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. at Voodoos.
