Orchestrated assistance for the Ladysmith Food Bank

The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra is performing a benefit for the food bank April 19 at Ladysmith Secondary School.

The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra (GVYO) is scheduled to perform a benefit concert for the local food bank at Ladysmith Secondary School (LSS) Friday, April 19.

Conducted by Yariv Aloni, the GVYO will perform works by Prokofiev, Grondahl and Brahms. The night will feature solos by violinist Eehjoon Kwon and trombonist Liam Caveney.

Jacquie Stewart, co-ordinator of the Ladysmith Food Bank, was surprised to learn that a benefit concert was being held on their behalf, but said she was delighted by the news.

Food drives hosted by the Nanaimo Airport and other organizations over the Christmas holidays have kept the food bank well stocked, Stewart said, meaning they haven’t had to buy much more than fresh fruits and vegetables.

Such generosity has been “terrific,” Stewart said, but the food bank can always find room for tinned soups, stews, beans or meats; the cornerstones of their food hamper program.

GVYO’s performance is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation of cash or non-perishable food items.
