Through his paintings, artist David Goatley shows his transformation from London-born Englishman to pre-eminent Canadian portrait painter.
The 60 paintings in this retrospective, on display at the downtown Nanaimo Art Gallery, selected from the hundreds he has painted, show how it happened.
From immediately recognizable public figures and corporate leaders, through affectionate portrayals of families, to paintings of fellow artists and a deeply personal, sometimes painful, series of self portraits, these 60 works chart the development of a vision and style in what the artist describes as a shared journey.
Goatley also painted several large scale works for churches, private homes and public spaces, including the mural Letters from the Front on the post office in Chemainus.
A Shared Journey will be on display Sept. 1-24.
Opening reception is set for Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.
