The blast of hip hop continues with another well-known rapper coming to V-town.
After the success of hometown boy SonReal’s appearance in Vernon on Boxing Day, 13th Floor Productions is presenting West Coast hip hop artist Evil Ebenezer at 2929 Nite Club Thursday.
Currently on his Deep Powder Tour, Evil Ebenezer is known for his mastery of cadence and is said to deliver haunting and personal lyrics showcased by raw and engaging live performances.
Although the road to hip hop heights hasn’t always been smooth, Ebenezer has managed to pump out a number of industry recognized albums, and has been recognized as “the best new voice in Canadian rap,” by Exclaim Magazine.
His debut album, Call Me Evil, was nominated for best hip-hop/rap music album at the 2005 West Coast Music Awards, and its video for single, Told You So, garnered a Leo award for best music video at the annual B.C. Film Industry Night in 2006.
However, Ebenezer’s entry into the arts goes back to the early ‘90s. Before he was a rapper, he was a child actor and performed in Stephen King’s It and the CBC series The Odyssey, and auditioned for roles along the likes of fellow Vancouverites Ryan Reynolds and Devon Sawa.
His budding career ended when he moved to rural Chilliwack where he met a movie-making eighth grader by the name of Stuey Kubrick (no relation to Stanley, we believe.)
The two bonded over A Tribe Called Quest and began making student films, with Kubrick directing and Evil acting.
They have continued to chase the “dream,” making videos together, with Ebenezer now as the musician/actor and Kubrick as the director.
With numerous accolades and a glowing resume including more than 250 tour dates in the last two years alone, Ebenezer has also joined up with fellow Vancouver hip hop artists Snak the Ripper and Young Sin to form the group Brass Tackz, which played the Warped Tour 2010 for crowds of 20,000 screaming fans.
In the interim, he created his solo album, Evil Eye, followed by 2011 mixtape The Birds and the Kush-Ups EP last year with fellow rapper Merkules.
Joining Evil Ebenezer’s Deep Powder Tour in Vernon is Alfy’O, Great Capacity, and Big Zig, The show is hosted by James Hughes.
Thursday’s show at 2929 starts at 10 p.m. Pre-sale and student (19 and up) tickets are $10 at the Downtown Internet Lounge or $15 at the door.
