Internationally-acclaimed Juno-award winner André Laplante is set to perform at the Langley Community Music School (LCMS) season opener of the Rose Gellert Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Over the last decade, Laplante has firmly established himself as one of the great romantic virtuosos. He garnered international attention after winning prizes at the Geneva and Sydney International Piano Competitions, then capturing the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Critics have compared him with Ashkenazy, Horowitz and Rudolph Serkin, and in 2005, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

“We are honoured to welcome such a critically acclaimed talent to Rose Gellert Hall,” said LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann.

“He will be playing some of the great romantic works that established his reputation as a legend of the concert stage, and the audience can expect an absolute musical tour de force.”

Laplante continues to tour the world as an orchestral soloist, working with symphonies from Vancouver, Montréal, Toronto, Chicago, Czech Republic, Minnesota, Buffalo, Columbus, Mexico and more.

When Laplante is not touring or serving as a juror on international piano competitions, he teaches class at the Montreal Conservatory as well as summer classes and master classes throughout Canada and the United States.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, he will be giving a master class from 5 to 8 p.m. at LCMS. Working with some of the music school’s senior piano students, audiences are welcome to attend as Laplante shares his musical and teaching insights. There is no charge to attend the class.

Tickets for the performance on Nov. 19 are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, $16 for students and $10 for LCMS students.
