Two local groups in the Vancouver Island One Act Play Festival took home some awards on Sunday after the festival.
Jurors Robb Mowbray and Peter Weinold returned to the Vancouver One Act Play Festival for another year. The two provided feedback to the audience and the actors immediately after the one-act play and then gave a more in-depth adjudication in private afterward.
Best Play went to Coal Town Remembered by Theatre Works in Courtenay. Coal Town Remembered also received Best Original Script, of which there were three this year, with the other two by ECHO Players.
Best Female Actor in a Lead Role went to Belle Warner in ECHO Players’ original production of The Girl in the Gallery.
Best Male Actor in a Lead Role went to Ross Stephenson in Coal Town Remembered.
Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role went to Reghan Geddes in Port Alberni’s Portal Players Dramatic Society’s production of Siriously.
Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role went to Alex Hunter in Kwalikum Secondary School’s drama department’s production of Complaint Department and Lemonade.
Honourable Mention went to Geoff Noble of ECHO Players’ original production of Claret and Amber.
Best Ensemble also went to Theatre Works’ production of Coal Town Remembered.
The Honourable Mention went to KSS for Complaint Department and Lemonade. The adjudicators said Complaint Department and Lemonade was a great opening for the festival. Mowbray said it was a good piece for students.
There was also a special award for committee dedication and work which went to Wendy Punter.
