Victoria area artists do well at Vancouver Island Music Awards

Singer-songwriter Katie Schaan led the Victoria charge at the seventh annual Vancouver Island Music Awards.

Her CD Close to Me was announced as Album of the Year during the gala awards ceremony, held Thursday at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay.

Among other Garden City musicians capturing awards on the night were Mike Ferguson and Nat Noel of Aegis Fang, who were co-winners of male vocalist of the year, and Christian Bergen, who grabbed male songwriter of the year honours.

Victoria’s The Turnpike Bandits collected the best live act award.

Other major winners included Helen Austin of Courtenay, who won both female songwriter and artist of the year, and Courtenay’s Emily Spiller, named top female vocalist.
