Sharing her artistic passion

Juma Wu to speak at Surrey Art Gallery about her painting and sculpting.

This week at the Surrey Art Gallery, artist Juma Wu will share her passion for painting, and sculpting with clay as part of the Thursday Artist Talk speaker series.

The Langley-based artist’s love of painting is evident in the unique drawings on her sculptures, and she revels in the anticipation of seeing her work come out of the kiln. An accomplished abstract artist originally from Taiwan, Wu believes that the combination of two and three dimensional works creates an interesting dialogue between the pieces, as if they are exchanging stories through space.

Although Wu graduated with a Fine Arts degree, she made a decision to pursue art in a significant way after experiencing a personal tragedy. With the encouragement of her ceramics teacher, and an intensity arising from a feeling that she was in a race with time, Wu’s efforts led to many solo and group exhibitions. These included the second and third annual Asian Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Japan, and a 2002 exhibition at Lincoln Centre in New York.

One of her most significant achievements took place in 2003 when she was entrusted to construct a stone table to celebrate an eminent Taiwanese artist, Mr. Liou, Chi Wei. Since immigrating to Canada in 2003, Wu has continued to create abstract art full time.

Admission to the May 5 artist talk is free. There will be time for questions and conversation during and following the talk, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments are provided. This event is presented by the Surrey Art Gallery Association in partnership with the Surrey Art Gallery, and with support from the Arts Council of Surrey.

Surrey Art Gallery is located at 13750 88 Ave. Phone 604-501-5566 for further information.
