This year’s Vancouver Island Short Film Festival includes Reproductive Cycles by Nanaimo filmmaker John Gardiner.

Short films chosen for annual festival

NANAIMO – Record number of films entered from across the globe.

Vancouver Island Short Film Festival’s selection committee has chosen this year’s festival lineup.

“The VISFF selection committee worked hard to narrow down the most entries we’ve ever had,” said Karla Duarte, festival director, in a press release. “The result is an impressive and unique combination of local, Canadian and international films.”

The selection committee received a record number of film entries this year, 112 film entries from 14 countries. Filmmakers submitted from Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, across Canada, the United States, Spain, Ireland, China, Iran and the United Kingdom.

Sixteen films were chosen to be showcased during the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival, which is Feb. 10-11 at Malaspina Theatre.

This year’s films include Reproductive Cycles by Nanaimo filmmaker John Gardiner and Drifter by Olivia Lingren of Vancouver.

Other Canadian filmmakers’ films include: Me, Baby and the Alligator by Jean Faucher; Mia by Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett; Ingrid and the Black Hole by Leah Johnston: Isolamento by Carmelo Zucco: It’s All In Your Head by Greg Jeffs; Descrambled Eggs by Kayla Jeanson and Sweat by Kristin Snowbird.

Foreign films include: Leonore’s Lullaby by Chinese filmmaker Quentin Paquignon: Found by Sunny Bahia, United Kingdom; Women’s Christmas Night by Oonagh Kearney from Ireland; Fish by Saman Hosseinpuor from Iran; Cradle by David Holechek and Jake Hart from the United States; Croissant by Marius Controtto Diaz from Spain and Lemonade Mafia by Anya Adams from the United States.

Films will be screened Feb. 10, starting at 7 p.m. and followed by a question-and-answer session with filmmakers, and Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The evening show on Feb. 11 will be followed by the awards ceremony.
