The City of Surrey’s Public Art Program is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from artists to create a unique design for a large scale, temporary vinyl printed mural for the construction hoarding planned to surround the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.
Artists who draw, paint, make prints, work in computer or graphic design or photography may consider this opportunity, provided they can produce their final design as a digital file.
Applicants are asked to draw inspiration from the theme “Connecting People, Connecting Places.”
The design fee is $5,000.
An artist information meeting will take place Saturday, June 18 at 3 p.m. at Surrey Central Library, Room 306, 10350 University Dr.
The Surrey Central SkyTrain Station will undergo a renovation process to increase capacity and improve station accessibility, safety and security. Construction will start in Fall 2016 and will continue for approximately 18 months.
The mural is intended to improve the experience of Surrey Central Station while it is under construction.
The exact dimensions and location of the mural will be finalized when the station construction company is on site.
The expectation is the mural will be mounted on ground-level construction hoarding or elevated site trailers along City Parkway.
The minimum length of the mural will be 32 feet and the maximum length of the mural will be the length of the hoarding on City Parkway (likely up to 80 feet).
The height of the mural will be determined by the height of the hoarding/site trailers, but is expected to be 8-12 feet.
An update of the hoarding measurements and the specifications resolution required will be provided to the shortlisted artists.
The digital file is to be delivered on a portable hard drive or flash drive (returnable.)
The contracted artist will retain copyright to their design and will provide a license for the use of their design for the purpose of creating the mural, and its promotion and documentation.
The deadline to submit packages is Wednesday, June 29 at 4 p.m. Email publicart@surrey.ca with the subject line Surrey Central Mural.
Only selected artists will be notified. Shortlisted artists will be publicly announced online by July 26.
