A Surrey woman’s design has been chosen to grace street banners in the city’s downtown core.

Artists were invited to submit banner designs on the theme “Water is Life.” The 2015 contest was aspen to all B.C. visual artists. A total of 44 proposals were received.

Swimming to the top of the heap was Ying (Nancy) Chen, a student in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at SFU Surrey, who won $2,500 for the use of her design for the 2015 street banners.

Her vibrant fish design in a yin-yang format, she said, was inspired by the growth made possible with the abundance of clean water.

“Water is not only a life source for animals, insects, and plants. It is also what binds us together, as a community, in our environment,” said Chen.

Her banner will hang in City Centre along University Drive and 100 Avenue and along King George Boulevard at 88 Avenue.
