The Surrey Youth Orchestra is celebrating another year of music with their final concert of the season on Sunday, May 14.

Taking place at Chandos Pattison Auditorium, 10238 168 St. at 7 p.m., the evening will feature performances by the junior strings, a lively group of the orchestra’s youngest players, and the intermediate strings.

The junior group have been rehearsing under accomplished violinist Andrea Taylor, and will perform Brahms Hungarian Dance #5 and Bach’s Sinfonia.

The intermediate group, working under Rose Gellert String Quartet member Ben Goheen, will lead with Astor Piazolla’s Spring from his vibrant work Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, followed by Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, the last of 12 London symphonies he composed.

Established in 1976, the Surrey Youth Orchestra brings together young musicians from throughout the Lower Mainland to learn music, become accomplished players and make lifelong friendships.

The spring concert will also include a solo performance by Bobby Zhang, 16, who won the honour during a Concerto Competition in January. He will play Mozart’s C Major Oboe Concerto.

Scholarship awards will also be presented to nine students on this evening.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for seniors, students and alumni.
