Campbell River’s Mary Harrison is a skilled artisan in a number of fields, but her latest venture may just be her most beautiful to date.
Harrison started creating silk ribbon embroidery wall hangings last year, and the delicate, intricate works she has been making are garnering rave reviews from all who view them.
Harrison said each square wall hanging is a unique, mixed media creation. She dyes some of her own ribbons and uses a wood burning tool to ‘carve’ petals from silk to create gorgeous flowers.
Some of the pieces include everything from jewelry, yarns, driftwood and much more. With some pieces, she starts with a sketch, and in others she just starts creating.
“Some are based on a crazy quilt format and some are floral designs on batik,” Harrison said.
The wall hangings are featured at the Campbell River art Gallery’s Christmas Market and Harrison will be on hand this Saturday from 1-3 p.m. to demonstrate how they are created.
The CR Art Gallery’s Christmas Arts and Crafts Market, sponsored by Chan, Nowosad and Boates, Chartered Accountants, will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Christmas Eve, including this Sunday, Dec. 23. The Market features the work of dozens of artisans from Campbell River, Quadra Island, Cortes Island and other communities in the region. Everything from jewelry to pottery to fine art is on display. It’s shopping local at its finest!
