The metamorphosis of children’s theatre

Mermaid Theatre brings The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle favourites to life in Vernon Saturday, Nov. 22.

“Dear Mermaid (Theatre Company) friends – Your performance is stunningly beautiful! You’ve captured and enhanced what I am trying to do. I was mesmerized by the tempo, colors, voice, movements, music… Best wishes and thank you!”

– Eric Carle, author

You know you are doing something right when one of the world’s most beloved children’s book authors and illustrators gives you that kind of accolade.

Audiences will get to see what Carle is talking about when the Vernon Performing Arts Centre presents The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites at the centre, Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Mermaid Theatre production is the second of four shows in the Performing Arts Centre Society’s 2014-15 kids’ series and closely follows those Carle favourites, providing a new generation with a seamless entry into the world of theatre.

Nova Scotia’s Mermaid Theatre is bringing its puppets and props to share their love of Carle’s classic stories.  Now in its 36th season, Mermaid ranks among North America’s most respected creators of family entertainment. Unique adaptations of children’s literature have delighted close to four million young people on four continents.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through an amazing variety of foods on his path to becoming a beautiful butterfly.

High up in the sky, Little Cloud playfully transforms himself into various creatures and objects, including a sheep, an airplane, a shark and more.

The Mixed-Up Chameleon is bored with his life, sitting about predictably changing colour all day. Following an adventurous trip to the zoo, he attempts to emulate the beautiful animals he sees before coming to the conclusion that there is value in his own unique self.

Directed and designed by Jim Morrow, who ranks among Canada’s most esteemed puppet masters, this triple-bill show incorporates evocative original music by Nova Scotian composer Steven Naylor and innovative black light staging techniques, which will highlight Morrow’s stunning puppets and props.

Tickets for The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites are $18 for all seats or $64 for a family pack of four tickets. Contact the Ticket Seller at 250-549-7469 or online at www.ticketseller.ca.
