Nanaimo Theatre Group marks half a century Saturday (April 16) with a celebration.
The community organization formed in 1961 as a small, dedicated group of theatre enthusiasts. Now the group presents four to five shows annually, including the traditional pantomime at Christmas.
The group began using rented venues for rehearsal and performance until acquiring the property on Rosstown Road. The building, which housed an independent school, was expanded and renovated to the size it is now, with the original performance space turned into the lobby area.
Dressing room with lighted mirrors, a kitchen, concession, green room and sewing area fill one space with room for state-of-the-art lighting and sound.
The group takes advantage of the space and their dedicated followers to participate in the North Island zone drama festival every year, often winning the right to participate in the provincewide mainstage festival in the summer.
People interested in being part of the next 50 years are invited to check out the group’s website for more information. Please visit www.nanaimotheatregroup.com.
