Whether driving, biking or walking, those taking the inaugural Caetani Artists Studio Trail are guaranteed to cool off with some cool art.
Local artists across Greater Vernon will be opening their homes, gardens and studios for the trail, which will feature 17 artists showing and selling their works at six different locations on Saturday, from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.
Judy Katalinic, executive director of the Caetani Culture Centre, has spearheaded the event as an approach to building a broader studio art trail in Vernon to attract locals and tourists alike.
“The Caetani centre is working together with our member artists to spread the word about our extraordinary local talent in Vernon and beyond,” she said. “Artist members who don’t have their own studios will be setting up on the Caetani grounds to create an art market on the trail.”
Both new and returning artists to the area will be exhibiting and selling their work along the studio trail. Many of them have travelled and have lived abroad, and are now returning to the place they call home, said Katalinic.
One of two stops on McKoryk Road, located in North BX, is the mother/daughter creative duo of Shelley and Leanne Cadden.
Shelley Cadden is debuting her ornate silver garden chimes made from re-cycled items from her showcase garden, located at 7377 McKoryk, while Leanne Cadden, back from 14 years away, is launching her series’ Pencil Sketches for Gramps, a body of 70 works that have been one and half years in the making. Printmaker and painter Christine Kashuba is also opening her studio next door at 7371 McKoryk Rd,
Her work includes baseball prints on paper and screen-printed fibre art and her spacious studio overlooking Swan Lake is a must-see for art lovers and aficionados.
Ed Goodon’s Metal Dream Design Studio, located at 6346 Pleasant Valley Rd., is hosting four visiting artists.
Painter Virginia May Brown, portrait painter Bruce Hale-Pearson and glass and metal artist Patricia Doyle will be sharing the gallery belonging to Edward and Debbie Goodon.
Since their grand opening in 2010, the Goodons have created an ornamental ironwork garden of original and custom metal sculpture designs. (Visit www.metaldreamdesign.com.)
Linda Wadley-Courtemanch has recently relocated to Vernon from Jasper, and is opening her Moods and Motions Art Studio at 1805-39th Ave. for the first time.
Visitors can see her debut show of en plein air oil landscapes, capturing the Okanagan.
Eight more local artists will be showcasing their work around the corner at the Caetani Cultural Centre, located at 3401 Pleasant Valley Rd.
Studio artists include artist-in-residence James Postill, Ryan Robson, David Goodliffe and Christine Pilgrim. Participating member artists include potter Laurel Fredin, painter Robyn Soderberg, musician Daniel Stark and the latest Caetani resident artist, painter Melissa Dinwoodie.
Another debut artist at the Caetani centre is musician and producer Darren Ketcheson, who will be giving a one-hour acoustic performance starting at 3 p.m. on the Caetani grounds. Music, face painting and refreshments will also provide fun for the kids and a relaxing atmosphere for visitors.
The final stop on the trail is 907 Kalamalka Lake Rd., where Caetani artist members Daryl and Anna-Marie Carlyle create concrete art on site in their production area at Unique Garden Arts & Gifts.
Their unique artwork, glassware, metalwork and creative advice will help anyone wanting to create a customized home, garden or business.
“This is a great opportunity to view debuting artistic talent and fresh new faces on the Vernon art scene,” said Katalinic. “We hope to develop the trail and showcase many more art studios and galleries in the future, to create a new visitor attraction for Vernon and the area.”
