The largest Ukrainian festival in the province happens Saturday at Mission’s Clarke Theatre.
“Over the years we have had hundreds of young people perform at our festival … all in pursuit of the coveted gold medal,” explained Gladys Andreas, festival originator. “They put on dances representing many regions of Ukraine. The variety of costumes is wonderful to behold.”
When the annual festival first began, it rotated through several host communities. The BCUCF came to Mission in 2003, and has remained there ever since.
“The recent cross-Canada tour by Virsky, the National Dance Troupe of Ukraine, generated quite a buzz, and has accelerated interest among young people of Ukrainian heritage in Ukrainian dance in Canada,” said Nathan Nychyporuk, current president of the BCUCF.
Along with the dance competitions, which begin at 9:00 AM, the day-long event will include musical performances, cultural exhibits, demonstrations, and traditional food. The public is welcome. Tickets are available at the front entrance.
